The Problem Isn't Facebook
One of the questions I hear most often is,
"Which Beaches upgrades are actually worth paying for?"
It's a great question.
The problem is that many families try to answer it by searching Facebook groups.
I completely understand why.
There are thousands of families sharing photos, reviews, and experiences.
The challenge is that everyone is answering based on their vacation.
Not yours.
That doesn't make their advice wrong.
It simply means it's missing context.
A Facebook Post That Stuck With Me
One post has stayed with me because it perfectly illustrates why crowdsourcing vacation decisions can be so challenging.
A mom shared that she was traveling with children and grandparents, and one of her biggest priorities was minimizing walking.
She had already booked the French Village and wanted recommendations for which building she should request to be as close to the beach as possible.
The comments started rolling in.
Some people recommended certain buildings.
Others shared where they had stayed.
Then someone confidently commented that Key West was the most centrally located village.
It isn't.
Key West is actually located at the far end of the resort.
No one was trying to give bad advice.
They were simply sharing what they remembered from their own vacation.
What surprised me even more was that very few people asked a different question.
If minimizing walking is one of your highest priorities, is the French Village really the best village to begin with?
That's where my thought process is different.
I Don't Start With Room Requests
If I were working with that family, my first goal wouldn't be figuring out which building to request.
I'd start by asking whether we were solving the right problem.
If they weren't traveling for several months, I'd watch inventory and promotions.
Sometimes another village becomes available at a similar price point.
Sometimes it doesn't.
Availability, travel dates, and budget all play a role.
If French Village truly ended up being the best option, I'd absolutely help them make the most of it.
But I'd also be honest about what that experience might feel like.
Room requests are never guaranteed.
What Walking Actually Feels Like
During one of my stays at Beaches Turks & Caicos, I was assigned a room in the last building of the French Village.
Before I even left the village, I had to walk from my room to the elevator, ride down (or take the stairs), and then walk across the entire French Village before I even started heading toward the beach or another village.
That extra walk from my room to the front of the village could easily add another five or six minutes by itself.
Then the walk continued.
Heading to the beach often took me around 12 to 15 minutes, depending on how quickly I was walking.
Walking to Treasure Beach Village was closer to 10-12 minutes.
Now imagine making that walk with:
a stroller,
beach bags,
refillable water bottles,
towels,
sunscreen,
toddlers who stop to look at everything,
and grandparents trying to keep up.
For some families, that's completely fine.
For others, it becomes something they notice every single day.
I saw a family say they wouldn’t book the French Village next trip because they like to go to the beach even if they just had an hour to spare and they couldn’t do that while staying in the French Village.
That's why I spend less time thinking about which building to request and more time thinking about whether we're starting in the right village in the first place.
Everyone Is Answering a Different Question
This isn't just true for villages.
I see it with every upgrade.
Someone asks if Concierge Level is worth an extra $2,500.
Immediately the comments begin.
"Absolutely."
"We never used it."
"Waste of money."
"Best decision we made."
Who's right?
Probably all of them.
Because they're answering based on:
their budget,
their kids,
their vacation style,
and what mattered most to their family.
No one can tell you whether Concierge is worth it without first understanding your priorities.
The same is true for walkout rooms.
Ocean-view rooms.
Separate sleeping areas.
Every upgrade.
I Compare Experiences, Not Features
When people compare upgrades online, they usually compare room categories.
Square footage.
Views.
Floor plans.
Furniture.
I find myself asking different questions.
Will this make your mornings easier?
Will it reduce walking?
Will it help everyone sleep better?
Will you actually spend time enjoying that balcony?
Will this change how your vacation feels every day?
Because that's where value comes from.
Not the room name.
The experience it creates.
The Best Upgrade Solves the Biggest Friction Point
Luxury isn't about spending the most money.
It's about spending intentionally.
Sometimes the smartest decision is upgrading.
Sometimes it's saving your money.
The right answer depends entirely on your family.
That's why my consultations don't begin with,
"Which room do you want?"
They begin with questions like:
Tell me about your favorite family vacation.
How do your kids sleep when you travel?
What usually frustrates you on vacation?
What does your perfect vacation day look like?
How important is convenience compared to saving money?
Once I understand those answers, the recommendations usually become much clearer.
